The Zwickau Thermal Energy Plant involves the construction of a modern energy generation facility based on pyrolysis technology, producing renewable heat, electricity and biochar. The plant is being developed on the site of a former power station and makes a significant contribution to the regional heat supply as well as to the long-term sequestration of CO₂. Commissioning of the plant is scheduled for 2027.

A key stability factor of the project is a 20-year heat supply agreement already secured with the local utility, in which the municipality holds a majority stake. This establishes long-term, predictable revenue streams and reduces earnings volatility. Regional heat supply holds high political priority within the context of the municipal heat transition, further reinforcing the project's long-term relevance.

In addition, the plant generates revenues from the feed-in of electricity produced, which is marketed as renewable baseload power under the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG).

Further revenue potential arises from the sale of biochar and the marketing of carbon credits in the growing carbon removal market. This combination of revenue streams creates a broad and resilient economic foundation for the long-term operation of the plant.

The technical implementation is based on proven pyrolysis technologies and is accompanied by independent expert assessments. Project development risks are addressed through close coordination with local authorities, clearly defined permitting pathways and a diversified supply base for organic residues.

By investing in this infrastructure project, a lasting contribution is made to the regional heat supply, one that combines renewable energy generation, long-term CO₂ sequestration and municipal energy security. At the same time, the project supports the decarbonisation of heat supply and delivers significant ESG impact through renewable heat, resource efficiency and carbon removal.
